The Cambridge House Move Checklist: Everything You Need to Stay Organised

Moving house is one of life's most stressful events — and if you're moving in or around Cambridge, you'll know it comes with its own particular challenges. A competitive rental and property market, tight parking in the city centre, and short tenancy overlap windows can all make what should be an exciting move feel chaotic. The good news is that with the right preparation, most of the stress is avoidable.
This checklist takes you from eight weeks out all the way to moving day, so you can stay on top of every step.
8 Weeks Before You Move
Book your removals firm early. Cambridge is a busy city and good removal companies fill up fast, particularly during the peak summer period and at the end of term. Get at least three quotes, confirm they're insured, and lock in your date as soon as you know it.
Start decluttering. Moving is the ideal time to be ruthless about what you actually need. Go room by room and separate things into three piles: keep, donate, and dispose of. The less you move, the cheaper and simpler the whole process becomes.
Measure up your new place. If you already have access to the floor plan of your new home, compare it to your current furniture. There's no point transporting a sofa that won't fit through the door.
4–6 Weeks Before You Move
Start collecting packing materials. Boxes, bubble wrap, and packing tape add up quickly if you buy them all at once. Start collecting sturdy boxes from supermarkets and local shops, and order specialist boxes for fragile items like mirrors and TVs.
Notify key contacts of your change of address. Work your way through the list: your bank, HMRC, the DVLA, your GP, your dentist, any subscriptions, and of course friends and family. The Royal Mail redirection service is a useful safety net, but it shouldn't be your only strategy.
Consider what needs temporary storage. If there's a gap between your move-out and move-in dates — even just a few days — or if your new home is smaller and you're not sure yet what you're keeping, renting a short-term storage unit can take enormous pressure off moving day. You won't need to make every decision at once, and your belongings will be secure while you settle in.
2–3 Weeks Before You Move
Begin packing non-essentials. Books, out-of-season clothes, spare bedding, decorative items — anything you won't need before moving day can be boxed up now. Label every box clearly on the top and at least one side, including which room it belongs in and a brief description of the contents.
Arrange parking. If you're in central Cambridge, check whether you need to apply for a temporary parking suspension with Cambridge City Council to ensure the removal van can get close enough. This can take time to organise, so don't leave it to the last minute.
Confirm your utilities. Contact your energy, broadband, and water providers to arrange transfers or final meter readings. If you're setting up new accounts at your new address, make sure everything is active before you arrive.
Moving Week
Pack an essentials box. This is the one box that travels in the car with you rather than the van. It should include the kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, a change of clothes, important documents, medication, and anything else you'll need on your first night. You'll thank yourself for it.
Do a final walkthrough. Before handing over your keys, check every room, every cupboard, the loft, the shed, and the garage. Look behind doors and inside built-in storage. It's surprisingly easy to leave things behind.
Take meter readings. On the day you leave your old home and the day you arrive at your new one, photograph the gas, electricity, and water meters with a timestamp. It takes two minutes and can save you a headache with billing later.
Document the condition of your new home. Before you start unloading, take photos of every room. This protects your deposit if you're renting, and gives you a useful record regardless.
After the Move
Give yourself time to settle before you try to unpack everything at once. Prioritise the bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom, and leave the rest until you've had a chance to breathe. A storage unit can be genuinely useful here too — keeping less essential boxes off-site while you figure out exactly where you want things means you're not tripping over boxes in every room while you get organised.
Update your address on any remaining accounts, and register with a local GP if you've moved into a new area. And once you're in and settled, it's worth checking your new home's contents insurance covers everything properly.
Moving is rarely entirely stress-free, but with a solid plan and the right support in place, it's much more manageable.
