Car Storage near Cambridge and Newmarket: Will Your Car Fit?

Not every car has somewhere safe to live. A classic car may need laying up for the winter, a second car may have nowhere to park, or you may be working abroad for a few months and not want to leave a vehicle on the street. If you're near Cambridge or Newmarket, storing a car inside a secure, enclosed unit is a practical alternative to a driveway or a rented garage, as long as the car fits.

Car Storage at CamStorage: Will My Car Fit?

We store cars inside our Extra Large steel units, which measure 2.4m wide, 6m long and 2.4m high (about 8ft by 20ft). That is enough length for most cars, but width is usually the deciding factor. Before you get in touch:

  • Measure the width including the mirrors. Manufacturers often quote width with the mirrors folded, so check both figures.
  • Allow room to get out. Once the car is parked you need to be able to open a door and step out, so a narrower car is much easier to store.
  • Plan for ramps. The unit floor sits above ground level, so a car needs suitable ramps to drive in.

We only store cars that fit inside a unit, and we don't offer caravan or motorhome storage. Send us the make and model and we'll confirm whether your car is suitable before you commit.

Why Store a Car in a Unit?

Protection from the weather. Inside a dry, well-ventilated steel unit, a car is kept out of the rain, frost and falling leaves that take their toll on paintwork and seals over a winter outdoors.

Security. A car locked inside a unit is out of sight. Our site is protected by 24-hour CCTV and an automated gate with personalised keyfob entry, so only authorised customers can come on site.

Your driveway back. Moving a second car or a weekend car into storage can free up space at home, particularly during a house move or building work.

Preparing a Car for Storage

Clean it inside and out. Dirt, bird droppings and food crumbs left for months can damage paint and upholstery and attract pests.

Look after the battery. A battery left connected for weeks will slowly drain. Disconnecting it, or taking it home to charge, makes restarting much easier.

Check the tyres. Inflate the tyres to the recommended pressure, as a car standing for a long period can develop flat spots.

Sort out insurance and tax. Speak to your insurer about laid-up or storage cover, and if the car will be off the road for a while, check whether you need to declare it SORN with the DVLA. We insure the structure of the unit, but not its contents, so your car needs its own cover.

Simple Monthly Terms

An Extra Large unit costs £150 a month including VAT, paid by monthly Direct Debit. The minimum period is one month and you give one month's notice when you're done, so you can store a car for a single winter or for as long as you need. Your own keyfob lets you come and go at times that suit you, so you can still take the car out on a dry weekend.

CamStorage is at Bottisham, just off the A14 at Junction 35 between Cambridge and Newmarket. Availability of Extra Large units varies, so please contact us with your car's make and model and we'll let you know whether it fits and when a unit is free.
